Flipping to Victory: Inside Utah’s Champion Gymnastics Team
The University of Utah has long been known as a powerhouse in college gymnastics, consistently ranking among the top teams in the country. But what sets this team apart from the rest? It’s not just their impressive skills and routines but also their strong sense of camaraderie and unwavering determination.
Led by head coach Tom Farden, the gymnastics team in Utah has a winning tradition that stretches back decades. Farden, who took over as head coach in 2015, has continued the program’s legacy of excellence, guiding the team to three consecutive Pac-12 Championships and two NCAA Championships in just six seasons.
Peek in:
One of the key factors behind Utah’s success is the team’s commitment to each other. Gymnastics is a team sport, but it’s also an individual one, with athletes competing in multiple events and striving for personal bests. Despite this, the Utah gymnasts always put the team first.
“We have a tight-knit group,” says Maile O’Keefe, a sophomore on the team. “We’re always pushing each other to be better, and we’re always there for each other.”
This sense of unity is evident both in and out of the gym. The gymnasts spend countless hours training together but also make time for team bonding activities like game nights and movie marathons. A result is a group of athletes who support each other and genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
Of course, it takes more than just teamwork to win championships. The Utah gymnasts are also incredibly skilled, with each athlete bringing their own unique strengths to the team. From Grace McCallum’s powerful vaults to Alexia Burch’s elegant floor routines, the team is a well-rounded force to be reckoned with.
But it’s not just the gymnasts who deserve credit for Utah’s success. The coaching staff, including Farden and assistant coaches Carly Dockendorf and Garrett Griffeth, play a crucial role in developing the athletes’ skills and preparing them for competition.
“Our coaches are amazing,” says Cristal Isa, a senior on the team. “They’re always pushing us to be our best, and they’re invested in our success both on and off the mat.”
Despite all their success, the Utah gymnasts aren’t content to rest on their laurels. They continue to push themselves to be better and to achieve even greater things in the future.
“We want to leave a legacy,” says O’Keefe. “We want to be remembered as one of the best teams ever.”
With their talent, dedication, and unwavering commitment to each other, there’s no doubt that the gymnastics team in Utah will continue to flip their way to victory for years to come, and everyone is here for it!
